Welcome to the RMD Website
This website has been developed by the National Commissioning Group (NCG) for Rare Mitochondrial Diseases of Adults and Children.
The principal aims in creating this website are:
- To provide publicly accessible, high quality
all aspects of mitochondrial disease.
- To make clinicians, scientists and healthcare professionals aware of the diagnostic and management options available to them to improve patient care.
We hope that patients, families and healthcare professionals, who are living with, or caring for patients with mitochondrial disease, will use this site. While we have striven to ensure that the information provided is both accurate and current, we recognise that some areas of mitochondrial disease remain contentious and that understanding of these diseases is continually evolving. We shall therefore update the site at regular intervals, bringing some of the latest research developments to your attention.
Unfortunately, the diverse and often complex nature of these diseases makes it impossible for us to respond to individual inquiries from patients or their families. We would strongly advise that in the first instance such questions are directed to the doctor who is directly responsible for your care. Similarly, information on this site regarding management of your mitochondrial disease should not be acted upon without prior discussion with your own doctor.
The NCG is a division of the National
Health Service (NHS)
responsible for directing funds to specialist services for rare
disorders. The NCG for Rare Mitochondrial Diseases of Adults and Children
was established on 1st April 2007 and has three participating centres
in Newcastle, London and Oxford. Referrals for clinical opinion and
requests for genetic or biochemical investigations can be made directly to
each of these centres. The referral forms are available on each of the
individual pages in the "Professionals" area of the website.
We hope that you find the site useful and informative, but would welcome any constructive suggestions you have for improvements. These can be posted to: email@example.com
